Egyptian jailed for threatening Filipina’s employer

Staff Report

DUBAI - An Egyptian man who threatened the employer of a Filipina worker in Dubai has been sentenced to one month in jail, followed by deportation.

MA, 30, will also pay a fine of AED 3,000 for sending text messages to the Frenchman, threatening to kill him if his Filipina housemaid did not pay back AED 2,000 which he claimed he lent to her.

“I received one of the messages, which said that our maid had taken AED 2,000 from the sender and that he wants his money back from the maid. He said he did not want to talk to the maid directly because she had taken a new boyfriend,” said the Frenchman in his testimony. He said that MA called his wife nearly 20 times a day for five days. The housemaid was already back in the Philippines since her visa was cancelled.

In court, the Egyptian denied having sexual relations with the 23-year-old housemaid, MR, saying they were just friends for 10 months. He told the court that they argued after she refused to give back his money and that she had left her smartphones and the keys to Frenchman’s villa in his car.

“She called me asking for her things back and I said OK but I sent her sponsor a message telling him that I want my money back in return for handing her the keys of the villa and her phones,” said MA.

In her testimony, the Filipina said that the Egyptian had promised to marry her but that she broke up with him after finding out that he was married.

“I told him I can’t be with him since he is married so he got angry and took my phones and the villa key then dropped me off and drove away,” she said. She added that she did not borrow money from him and that he was asking for money from her in return for giving back the items he took.
