DUBAI - While it is generally okay to shoot or film in public places in the UAE, here are a few things you should keep in mind to stay out of trouble:
Do
Ask permission if you are taking photographs of other people, especially of women and families.
Article 379 of the UAE Penal Code makes it clear that taking a person’s picture without their consent or in legally permitted circumstances shall be considered an invasion of that person’s privacy.
Penalty for offenders: confiscation of the camera or device, fine and imprisonment
Don’t
Shoot or film in military areas, palaces, courts, embassies and government buildings
Penalty for offenders: Taking photos in restricted areas can result in one to three months in jail or fine of up to AED 5,000
Publish pictures of people without their consent.
Exceptions to this offense are: if the picture is captured at a public event, if the picture of of public figures or celebrities or if the publication of the pictures is permitted by authorities in the interest of the public
Penalty for offenders: Detention of up to six months and fine
