Hike in electricity, water rates in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI - Starting on January 1 next year, expatriates in Abu Dhabi will be paying more for using electricity and water.

The Regulation and Supervision Bureau in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Distribution Company and Al Ain Distribution Company announced that customers will be charged different tariffs for “green” and “red” consumption bands.

The charge for water use for expats living in apartments will increase from AED2.2 per 1,000 litres to AED5.95 per 700 litres per day. Additional charges will be levied on those using more than 700 litres of water a day.

For expats living in villas, the increase will be from AED2.2 to AED5.95 per 1,000 litres up to 5,000 litres per day, with additional charges for those using more than 5,000 litres per day.

UAE nationals living in apartments will also start paying AED1.7 per 1,000 litres of water used, and up to 700 litres a day. An additional charge of AED1.89 for every 1,000 litres will be levied on those using more than 700 litres of water per day.

Emiratis living in villas will pay AED1.7 per 1,000 litres of water and may consume up to 7,000 litres a day, otherwise a charge of AED1.89 for every additional 1,000 litres will apply.

The charge for electricity consumption for expats will increase from 15 fils per kilowatt-hour to 21 fils. For UAE nationals, the price of 5 fils per kilowatt-hour remains, provided that the electricity consumption does not exceed 30 kilowatt-hour per day, otherwise the fee is 5.5 fils per kilowatt-hour.
