Motorists with chronic diseases to be banned from driving in UAE

DUBAI - People with chronic diseases may have their driving licence suspended or revoked if they pose a threat to other road users, the Ministry of Interior said.
Chronic diseases are long-term medical conditions that are progressive, such as heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy and stroke.
Brigadier Ghaith Hassan Al Za’abi, Director General of the Traffic Coordination Department at the Ministry of Interior, said the decision will be implemented in the future to reduce traffic accidents caused by drivers suffering from chronic diseases that affect their ability to drive safely.
Emarat Al Youm quoted Al Za’abi as saying that a unified platform for medical examination of drivers will be implemented in the UAE and that medical facilities in the country will be linked to traffic departments to allow the sharing of drivers’ medical reports.
He said the Ministy of Interior decision about the suspension of the licence will be taken after the physician’s report and will take into account the severity of the disease.
